R.Kelly Has a TRIAL DATE Set for Rape Charges
R. Kelly is finally set to face trial over child pornography charges, more than five years after he was first charged.
The 'Ignition' star - real name Robert Kelly - will go on trial for 14 counts of child pornography after Judge Vincent Gaughan set a court date of September 17 at a hearing yesterday (01.08.07).
Kelly faces up to 15 years behind bars if he is convicted of videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl.
The R'n'B singer's spokesperson said: "Robert has said many times he believes in our justice system. He is looking forward to finally having his day in court. He's confident that when all the facts come out, it will be clear he's not guilty of any crime."
Prosecutors believe the girl in question may have been as young as 13 at the time the tape was recorded, but defence lawyers are disputing both her age, and Kelly's presence on the film.
Kelly was originally charged with 21 counts of child pornography in June 2002, all of which he denied. Seven of the charges were later dropped.
The trial was delayed last year when Judge Gaughan fell off a ladder and suffered multiple broken bones.
